Yard Waste Pickup
Information
Sheet |
| |
Your Fairwinds
Community Association has arranged for a curb-side yard waste pick-up
service. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s household garbage pick-up does
not include yard waste and therefore homeowners can only legally dispose of
their yard waste by taking it to a disposal site and paying a disposal fee.
For smaller quantities this can be expensive. This service is therefore a
low cost alternative and has the added benefit of eliminating yard waste
that ends up on vacant lots or golf course property. Let’s keep Fairwinds
as beautiful as it can be. |
| |
- Pick-up is to start
approximately April 15 of each year and end approximately October 15.
This year it will start Monday April 19.
- The service will be weekly and
the pick-up day will be Monday, whether or not it is a holiday
- Residents will be responsible
for purchasing labels to affix to their yard waste bags, at a cost of
$3.00 each, plus applicable taxes. Fairwinds is assisting us by allowing
these to be purchased at the Fairwinds Centre at their main desk. They
will accept various forms of payment.
- Residents will also be
responsible for purchasing clear plastic (33 gallon/127 liter/large)
garbage bags such that the contents can be easily identified. These are
available at retailers such as Canadian Tire, Home Depot, or Home
Hardware. Only natural yard waste such as grass cuttings, leaves,
branches, plant material, etc. will be picked-up. No stones, household
garbage, man-made items, metals, pet or animal feces, tree trunks, stumps,
or large tree limbs will be allowed. Bags must have a label affixed and
their maximum weight is limited to 45 pounds. Bags that are not in
compliance with these conditions will not be picked-up.
- Homeowners are to have their
bag(s) at the curb in front of their homes by 7:00 AM on the day of
pick-up and if the day corresponds to an RDN garbage day, to place their
bags in a separate location from their household garbage.
- The bags will be disposed of
at a legal disposal station or dump where yard waste composting takes
place.
- This service is being run by
Shaun Groenier of Shaun’s Lawn. He currently provides general landscaping
services to the residents of Fairwinds, and is well known in the area. He
can be reached on his cell phone number at (250) 729-6515.
-
We
will honor labels sold last year with the KL Delivers name on them.

Canada Goose Control |
 |
Anne Murphy has been hired for a two week test period to
use her birds: an eagle and a hawk, to encourage the Canada Geese to move
off of Fairwinds. See the
Fairwinds Society website for information on Anne and her
accomplishments. The eagle is a predator and just having him flying
low over the fairways is enough to make the geese fly away. If you
happen to see Anne and her birds working during the 3:00pm-dusk time frame,
please keep out of her way and give her the space to work her birds.
Fairwinds original goal was to have Anne Murphy patrol the
course every day from 3:00 p.m. till dusk for 2 weeks and then evaluate
the results. She has had great success as you are aware. Anne and Eddy
(the eagle) will be working the course on a maintenance level of 3 days /
week, 2 hrs / day for a period of time. Jim has asked her to vary the
times and the days of the week that she is here so there is no established
pattern for the geese to adapt to. Fairwinds budgetary goal is to work
toward 2 days a week throughout the year as required.
An important part
of Anne's program is to give her the right of way on the golf course.

Golf Carts from: Cst. Michael ELSTON,
Oceanside RCMP, i/c Municipal Traffic |
|
 |
In order to enhance public safety on the roadways in and
around the Fairwinds community, the Oceanside RCMP are reminding the public
that anyone who utilizes a golf cart when golfing must ensure that they have
the required insurance to allow the carts to cross a roadway in order to
access all parts of the golf course. An operation permit can be
obtained from the RCMP Detachment. A person may then take the permit
to an insurance agent who will issue documentation which will allow the
carts to be used in such a fashion. |
| |
|
| |
All community members are also reminded that golf carts
can not be used to travel along any roadway. The Oceanside Detachment
is aware of people who transport themselves to and from their homes on a
golf cart using public roadways. This is absolutely prohibited and
persons caught doing this may have their carts towed and could be fined
$598.00 for operating a vehicle without insurance. There is no
insurance that can be purchased to use a golf cart in such a fashion since
they do not meet vehicle safety regulations for operation on public
roadways. |

VISIBILITY OF HOUSE NUMBERS |
 |
When emergency vehicles, police, fire or ambulance are
called to your home in a time of need it is critical that the street address
you have given them is easily visible and recognizable at the entrance to
your property. So often house numbers have faded and weathered, or
plants & bushes have grown to a point of hiding one or more of the numbers.
If your house number can been seen from the street, it is recommended that
they be positioned under a light and that light be left on during the night.
It only costs a few cents a day to have a 100 watt incandescent bulb burning
in an outside fixture during night hours. This is also a deterrent to
a potential thief.
Consider getting new house numbers for the gate, fence
or house that are produced in reflective materials. Ones that will
show up when a vehicle's headlights hit them. Don't wait for an
emergency to happen; when seconds count you want help to be able to find you
as quickly as possible.
Check your visibility by going out on the street a
different times during the day and night. Can you easily find your
street number, if you can't, it is time to change them. |
