Theft
Notice |
| |
Dear
Fairwinds Residents,
Please be
aware that there has been a rash of thefts in the Nanoose area, from
Beachcomber to Schooner Cove and Fairwinds. The thieves have been targeting
marine-related items such as small outboards, downriggers and boat
trailers. We have lost these types of items from the Marina over the last
couple of weeks, including boat trailers from the upper gravel lot.
Not only
have the thieves been working the local marinas such as Beachcomber and
Schooner Cove, they have been targeting homes and backyards as well.
I encourage
you to please report any suspicious activity around Schooner House and
Schooner Cove Marina to the Oceanside RCMP at (250) 248-6111 and to Greg
Dunn at Schooner Cove Marina at (250) 468-5364.
To ensure
accuracy and efficiency, the RCMP must be called as soon as possible after
the sighting of any unusual occurrence. Things that may seem trivial to us
could be a very important piece of a bigger puzzle to the RCMP.
For
security reasons, Schooner Cove Marina has decided to keep the gate at the
top of the dock closed 24\7. Because I realize that our neighbours enjoy
walking the docks during the day and into the evenings, I have included my
cell number on the gate sign at the top of the ramp. Please don’t hesitate
to call and mention “Fairwinds Good Neighbour Policy” to identify yourself
as a Fairwinds resident and I will be happy to provide the gate code.
If you have
any questions, please do not hesitate call or email me.
Regards,

|

Microsoft Computer Scam |
| |
 | this happened to one our residents so it is not an unfounded alert
|
 | phone call is received from somebody claiming to be from 'Microsoft',
telling them they have a serious virus on their computer which was noticed
at the most recent update. They offer to fix the problem.
The caller gives them a hard sell, telling them all types of bad things
that can happen to their computer if they do not fix it immediately. |
 | to gain your trust they will direct you to the EVENT VIEWER in Windows
which show details about various hardware and software issues. This
EVENT VIEWER is always full of messages, even on a healthy computer, but
the caller will convince you these are signs of impending disaster. |
 | when convinced, they will direct you to a website to download a remote
control program... at this point the caller can take control of your
computer. From this they can gain personal information from
your computer and they ultimately will suggest you purchase a piece of
software that will supposedly remove the virus -- they will ask for a
credit card. |
 | However, part of the scam’s damage may already have been done when the
customer downloaded the remote control software. This software could well
have the capability to sit in the background for months or years, stealing
personal information from the computer like bank login details and other
personal details that could be used for identity theft purposes.
These callers could also be using this software to infect your computer
with real viruses and malware. |
If you received such a phone call from anybody claiming to be from
Microsoft -- HANG UP!!! |

Almost everyone will be approached by a scammer
in one way or another. It could be in person, by phone, by mail or by
e-mail. Some
are easy to spot while others may appear to be genuine offers or bargains.
The FCA is adding a page to the website to post some scams that residents
have experienced while living here in Nanoose and to give you some tips on how to protect yourself from a

Fairwinds Memorial Benches |
 |
The loss of a loved one is always hard. As a way of remembering out
loved ones, the FCA, in partnership with Fairwinds Corporation, will be
placing 16 memorial benches throughout the community. These benches
can be "rented" by you and a personalized plaque will be attached to honour
your loved one. A sample bench is on display on Fairwinds Drive,
adjacent to the sidewalk leading up to Fairwinds Center. For

Yard Waste Pickup
Information
Sheet |
| |
Your Fairwinds
Community Association has arranged for a curb-side yard waste pick-up
service. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s household garbage pick-up does
not include yard waste and therefore homeowners can only legally dispose of
their yard waste by taking it to a disposal site and paying a disposal fee.
For smaller quantities this can be expensive. This service is therefore a
low cost alternative and has the added benefit of eliminating yard waste
that ends up on vacant lots or golf course property. Let’s keep Fairwinds
as beautiful as it can be. |

Canada Goose Control |
 |
Anne Murphy has been hired for a two week test period to
use her birds: an eagle and a hawk, to encourage the Canada Geese to move
off of Fairwinds. See the
Fairwinds Society website for information on Anne and her
accomplishments. The eagle is a predator and just having him flying
low over the fairways is enough to make the geese fly away. If you
happen to see Anne and her birds working during the 3:00pm-dusk time frame,
please keep out of her way and give her the space to work her birds.
Fairwinds original goal was to have Anne Murphy patrol the
course every day from 3:00 p.m. till dusk for 2 weeks and then evaluate
the results. She has had great success as you are aware. Anne and Eddy
(the eagle) will be working the course on a maintenance level of 3 days /
week, 2 hrs / day for a period of time. Jim has asked her to vary the
times and the days of the week that she is here so there is no established
pattern for the geese to adapt to. Fairwinds budgetary goal is to work
toward 2 days a week throughout the year as required.
An important part
of Anne's program is to give her the right of way on the golf course.

Golf Carts from: Cst. Michael ELSTON,
Oceanside RCMP, i/c Municipal Traffic |
|
 |
In order to enhance public safety on the roadways in and
around the Fairwinds community, the Oceanside RCMP are reminding the public
that anyone who utilizes a golf cart when golfing must ensure that they have
the required insurance to allow the carts to cross a roadway in order to
access all parts of the golf course. An operation permit can be
obtained from the RCMP Detachment. A person may then take the permit
to an insurance agent who will issue documentation which will allow the
carts to be used in such a fashion. |
| |
|
| |
All community members are also reminded that golf carts
can not be used to travel along any roadway. The Oceanside Detachment
is aware of people who transport themselves to and from their homes on a
golf cart using public roadways. This is absolutely prohibited and
persons caught doing this may have their carts towed and could be fined
$598.00 for operating a vehicle without insurance. There is no
insurance that can be purchased to use a golf cart in such a fashion since
they do not meet vehicle safety regulations for operation on public
roadways. |

VISIBILITY OF HOUSE NUMBERS |
 |
When emergency vehicles, police, fire or ambulance are
called to your home in a time of need it is critical that the street address
you have given them is easily visible and recognizable at the entrance to
your property. So often house numbers have faded and weathered, or
plants & bushes have grown to a point of hiding one or more of the numbers.
If your house number can been seen from the street, it is recommended that
they be positioned under a light and that light be left on during the night.
It only costs a few cents a day to have a 100 watt incandescent bulb burning
in an outside fixture during night hours. This is also a deterrent to
a potential thief.
Consider getting new house numbers for the gate, fence
or house that are produced in reflective materials. Ones that will
show up when a vehicle's headlights hit them. Don't wait for an
emergency to happen; when seconds count you want help to be able to find you
as quickly as possible.
Check your visibility by going out on the street a
different times during the day and night. Can you easily find your
street number, if you can't, it is time to change them. |
